The Karnataka Higher Education Department has rejected caste discrimination

The higher education department rejected the proposal to establish a tribal university in the state.

The Department of Language and Culture has proposed a Tribal University to encourage further research and studies on tribal communities.

The Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) rejected the proposal in its recent general meeting. Instead, it was decided to offer tribal-related courses or lectures at the existing Janapada (Folklore) University.

The idea of ‚Äč‚Äčestablishing a tribal university is based on the recommendation of the Cabinet sub-committee. A committee of experts headed by Dr. R. Balasubramaniam, founder of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, was formed.

However, it was said that there is no need for a separate university. “Instead, the committee can be formed by the research chair of any existing university,” said a senior KSHEC official.

The official added, “The expert committee has indicated that the Tribal Community and Center for the Study of Tribal Community will work on reservation in education at Kuvempu University.”

According to the All India Higher Education Survey Report 2018-19, Karnataka has a population of 42,48,987 Scheduled Tribes (STs).

“The total number of students in this community is around 1.5 lakh and there is no need to establish a separate university for this number,” the report of the expert committee said.

Janapada University will be directed to offer tribal courses from the next academic year, officials said.
