Current students | The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission offers student internships

The West Virginia Commission on Higher Education Policy has a legislative/public affairs student internship opportunity for the 2023 West Virginia Legislative Session and Spring Semester.

The internship starts in January and runs until late April or early May.

Interns work Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 5 pm and are located in the Charleston office.

While this has been a full-time intern in the past, the agency has some scheduling flexibility and will consider additional options for a highly qualified student intern.

Interns are required to attend or participate in person in daily floor sessions and academic-related committee meetings.

Interns monitor and review higher education legislation by reviewing proposed legislation and related materials on a daily basis, presenting and arguing in the legislative process, and are asked to assist with special projects and assignments related to the agency’s mission.

Candidates should be mature, strong writers with an interest in following and learning about the legislative process and policy developments. Interns major in journalism, public relations, political science or public administration and have an interest in government affairs or policy.

Depending on the arrangement with the student’s academic department, interns may earn up to 12 hours of college credit for full-time work at the commission.
